Our current and ex-serving Defence personnel need our support, and fitness facilities across the country are banding together to do what they can to help.

In the three week period between October 27 and November 19 2020, nine current and ex-service members committed suicide. Between 2001 and 2017, there were 419 suicides among current serving, reserve and contemporary ex-serving ADF personnel; 18% higher than the national average for contemporary ex-serving men (AIHW 2019a). According to estimates from the 2017–18 NHS, almost 2 in 5 (37%) men who had served in the ADF reported a disability.

Deadlifts for Diggers – Doing their part for Defence Veterans

On ANZAC Day, 2019, nine gyms and fitness businesses across the Eastern seaboard organised and executed their first Deadlifts for Diggers charity event. Together they raised over $4000 for Wounded Heroes, a national non-profit community organisation, who directly supports veterans and their families with valuable programs such as Homeless Heroes, 84aM8, Horses 4 Heroes, and Jobs 4 Heroes.

Of course, the charity event wasn’t an option during the Covid-19 lockdown of 2020. However, in 2021, even more facilities are joining forces to support this venerable cause, aiming to raise over $10000 for veteran support services.

Deadlifts for Diggers incorporates the Defence Force’s long history of elite physical fitness, mental toughness, and teamwork in an event to raise funds for struggling veterans and their families. Through collaborative exercise, the Anzac Day weekend event aims to raise awareness of the link between mental health and physical health, and invites participants from across the country at over 20 fitness facilities in a fun and competitive atmosphere. Coaches and trainers at the facilities will guide their teams in an hour-long deadlift competition, sponsored by facilities members and the local public, with all funds raised donated to veteran-supporting charities.
