The brand-new leisure centre, which boasts state-of-the-art pools, children’s play area, gym facilities, creche, health club and café sold more than 900 memberships prior to opening.

YMCA NSW (Y NSW) CEO Susannah Le Bron said the Y was thrilled to provide more than 100,000 Canberrans in Weston Creek, Woden and the Molonglo Valley areas with affordable fitness, community programs and opportunities to connect.

“Stromlo has been absolutely buzzing for the past few weeks with cutting-edge gym equipment installs, lifeguard training, Learn to Swim enrolments and more than 900 Foundation Members signing up to join the Y at this jewel in the Molonglo Valley.

“During these challenging times, it’s also so refreshing to be able to offer new employment opportunities to the people of Canberra and specifically to create jobs for young people, who we know have been disproportionately affected by the pandemic.

“There have already been 70 jobs created by the Y at Stromlo with that number to grow to more than 110 as we operationalise over the next 12 months.”

President of the home club the Woden Valley Swim Club Marcus Stokes said the club couldn’t wait to dive in.

He said:

“I and our members are incredibly excited about Woden Valley Swim Club becoming the resident swim club at Stromlo Leisure Centre in partnership with the YMCA, we have been working together for some time to make this transition happen.”

“Our swimmers are going to love training at this beautifully designed new facility, likewise our coaches will enjoy working in this amazing setting.”

Minister for Sport and Recreation Yvette Berry said Stromlo Leisure Centre provides yet another world-class facility for the community to enjoy.

She said:

“Between walking paths, cycling circuits, sweeping views of the mountains and equestrian trails, Stromlo Forest Park is quickly becoming a thriving hub for sport and recreation in the ACT.”

“It’s important that Canberrans have access to facilities that will allow them to live a healthy and active lifestyle. The ACT consistently has the highest sport participation rates in the country and as a result. The ACT Government is committed to meeting the needs of the community.”

The Y NSW also proudly manage Canberra Olympic Pool, Gungahlin Leisure Centre and Lakeside Leisure Centre on behalf of the ACT Government. Stromlo Leisure Centre was designed by Cox Architecture and built by Kane Constructions.
